Hudson River Park runs along the west side of Manhattan offering greens for sunbathing, free concerts, and hundreds of outdoor activities.

The 850-foot long Pier 45 in Greenwich Village (cross at Christopher St) is NYC’s most picturesque pier for sunbathing and free activities. Amenities include shade structures, seating areas, wood decking and a stretch of grass lawn that has become a favorite spot for sunbathers. Nearby you can grab food and refreshments at the Regatta Cafe or catch the NYC Water Taxi to the Beach. Pier 46 also has free fishing for all ages with Big City Fishing, as well as educational programs. Heat up, then cool down using Pier 45′s super interactive water feature -enjoy a spritz of fresh water right when you need it. The Hudson River Park Trust also sponsors free events on Pier 45 in the summer. Here is what’s going on this summer at Pier 45, 46 (as well as other piers up to 96):

Luna alumni DEAN & BRITTA perform original scores to Warhol’s rarely seen short silent film portraits, which captured Factory superstars, celebrities, and anonymous teenagers in mesmerizing 4-minute shots. “The music unabashedly translates the ominous drone of early Velvet Underground songs like I’m Waiting for the Man and Venus in Furs into a more modern electronic mode reminiscent of Giorgio Moroder’s chic torture-chamber disco.” (NY Times) Commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum, the project is like an archeological dig unearthing NYC’s 1960s art scene, complete with soundtrack. Brooklyn’s CRYSTAL STILTS, “moody-sounding f***ers who make fabulous stripped-down garage-pop,” (Pitchfork) will set the tone for the night.

Sarajevo-born GORAN BREGOVIC is a seminal figure in the Yugoslav rock world, a film composer who has been likened to Enio Moriconi and Nino Rota, and a co-conspirator with artists as varied as Iggy Pop and Cesaria Evora. With his own massive band, featuring brass, a classical string ensemble, an all-male choir, and traditional Bulgarian and Roma singers, he marries the dance music of a raucous gypsy wedding with Eastern European choral arrangements in “a mind-blowing return trip with no destination or port of arrival…a magnificent concert, one of the greatest marvels to be heard on stage today.” (La Vanguardia, Spain)

“I wish there were more rock bands who played like ETHEL.” (Guardian UK) In a special Celebrate Brooklyn commission, the nation’s premier rock-infused, postclassical string quartet teams up with the artrock wild men of GUTBUCKET to perform a new original score to the vintage Mexican science fiction classic La Nave De Los Monstruos (The Monsters’ Ship, 1959). In the film, the last male on Venus has died and two Venusian hotties embark on a quest to find men on other planets. The two bands dig into this fertile ground after developing the project at a BRIClab residency this spring. GUTBUCKET performs an opening set. For more than 35 years KRONOS QUARTET has pushed, made fun of, made irrelevant, and pretty much pulverized the standard notion of the string quartet, assembling in the process “a body of work unparalleled in its range and scope of expression.” (NPR) Their repertoire runs the gamut from Bartók to Charles Mingus to Jimi Hendrix, and their collaborators have been as diverse as Philip Glass, Asha Bhosle, and Nine Inch Nails. They share the Bandshell stage with the frenzied and slightly diabolical LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII, a Gypsy punk string ensemble that “plays renditions of Appalachian and Gypsy tunes that run from lively and infectious to deeply melancholy.” (Time Out NY)

McCarren Park Pool on the border of McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is the crackling, depression-era public swimming pool that hosted the infamous summer pool parties & concerts for the past three summers. This summer however, it is set to become a swimming pool again (renovations are set to begin on schedule this summer) leaving thousands of New Yorkers wondering if there can ever be a replacement for the slip-n-slide and pick-up dodgeball games! (Awesome Photos and Videos of last year’s McCarren Pool Parties)

This year, the pool-less “pool parties” will move to its new home on the Williamsburg waterfront. The 6,000 capacity waterfront strip along the East River (between North 8th and 9th Streets just a few blocks from McCarren Park Pool) has a skyline view of Manhattan (kind of like the Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City) and will offer a breezier and very “different” aesthetic appeal than McCarren Park Pool. The organizers (JellyNYC) promised to include the popular slide-n-slide and dodgeball games as well as a few surprises to be announced with the eight consecutive shows from July 12-August 30. The organizers are still working hard to finalize have finalized the logistics and bands so that we can all enjoy free outdoor concerts in Williamsburg again this summer. I can’t wait!

- The waterfront will also be used for classical and opera concerts throughout the summer.
- The Pool Parties are also going national this summer, so even if you’re not in the Brooklyn area, you can still experience the uniqueness of the free concert series out on the West Coast in San Francisco’s Treasure Island.

Central Park is home to a busy summer schedule of free concerts: Central Park Summerstage located at Rumsey Playfield and Naumburg Orchestral Concerts located at the Naumburg Bandshell are two examples of large scale musical events.

Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child was the special guest star at Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG)’s Aloft Launch Party in Hawthorne, NY on June 12, 2008. Starwood Hotels & Resorts launched it’s 8th hotel brand called Aloft featuring loft-style hotel rooms. Amongst an intimate 150 SPG Platinum members, Michelle Williams and her dance entourage of three performed a debut from her new album called “Unexpected” with her first single “We Break the Dawn.” It was an amazing night and here are a couple of video clips of Michelle’s performance:

2009 Update: Great news for New Yorkers this summer! The McCarren Pool Parties will continue at new home on Williamsburg Waterfront!

Update: This is the last year the Pool Party will be hosted at McCarren Pool as the pool is set to open next year…as an actual pool. JellyNYC is urging New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to provide a space at the Proposed Bushwick Inlet Park, just a few blocks from McCarren Park in nearby Williamsburg/Greenpoint. They have created a petition and hopes to gain 10,000 signatures. If you have experienced the Pool Parties at McCarren Park over the past three years and are a fan of free outdoor music and fun, please help keep the party alive. Otherwise, you’ll have to go to the Water Taxi Beach.

Upon arrival, you will find yourself in the midst of a huge emptied pool with the stage in front and water volleyball and slide and slide on the left and dodgeball area on the right. What better way to describe the atmosphere and activities than through photos. Here they are:

Islandwoo Tips to make your trip to your pool party a little better: bring a towel (to sit on and to dry you off), enough cash for beer, bring swim wear (you’ve got to do the slip and slide), enough sunblock (duh, its outdoors and its summer) and go over to the dodgeball area early to grab a seat for the game!
