</p><p>Summers in NYC would not be complete without visiting one of the city&#8217;s many rooftop bars and outdoor gardens. For many locals, this is a great escape from our tiny studio-side apartments with windows 3 feet away from the next building. Uh huh!</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/hudson-skyterrace1-300x112.jpg" alt="The Hudson Hotel’s New Sky Terrace" width="200" /><strong><a href="http://www.hudsonhotel.com/default.aspx#/explore/?id=skyterrace" target=_blank>The Hudson’s New Sky Terrace</a></strong><br />
356 W. 58th Street; 212-554-6000<br />
Located on the 15th floor of the Hudson Hotel, Sky Terrace is now open to the public! A large hammock-lined landscaped terrace with sweeping city and Hudson River views. Try the mango ginger margarita.</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/salon-de-ning-rooftop1-300x209.jpg" alt="Salon de Ning Rooftop" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.salondening.com/" target=_blank>Salon de Ning</a></strong><br />
Peninsula Hotel, 700 5th Avenue, at 55th Street; daily 4:00PM &#8211; 1:00AM<br />
Themes based on the tale of Shanghainese socialite Madame Ning and her travels. Expensive drinks, but the views and decor are worth it!</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/230-fifth-rooftop1-300x197.jpg" alt="230 Fifth Rooftop Garden" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.230-fifth.com/" target=_blank>230 Fifth Rooftop Garden</a></strong><br />
230 5th Ave (&#038; 27th St.), 20th floor; Open everyday 4:00PM &#8211; 4:00AM<br />
Expensive drinks and a little cheesy, but 230 Fifth offers the city’s largest rooftop bar and best views of the Empire State Building</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/koons-met-rooftop-300x118.jpg" alt="Cantor Rooftop Garden at Metropolitan Museum of Art" width="180" /><strong><a href="http://islandwoo.com/2008/06/22/metropolitan-museum-jeff-koons-on-the-roof-garden/" target=_blank>Cantor Rooftop Garden at Metropolitan Museum of Art</a></strong><br />
1000 5th Avenue, at 82nd Street; 212-570-3820<br />

<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/a60-rooftop-300x225.jpg" alt="A60 (Above 60) Rooftop" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.60thompson.com/" target=_blank>A60 (Above 60) Rooftop</a></strong><br />
60 Thompson Street, between Spring and Broome Streets; Open everyday 6:00PM &#8211; 12:30AM<br />
Hotel guests and members-only rooftop bar with stunning views of downtown Manhattan. Another Thompson hotel rooftop that is open to the public&#8230;<br />
<img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/above-allen-roof1-300x184.jpg" alt="Above Allen Rooftop" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.thompsonhotels.com/" target=_blank>Above Allen Rooftop</a></strong><br />

This new rooftop has the usual expensive drinks but also has great music, great views of midtown &#038; a popular Wednesday night.</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/bohemian-beer-garden-09-300x225.jpg" alt="Bohemian Hall Beer Garden" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://islandwoo.com/2008/06/30/enjoy-summer-at-the-bohemian-beer-garden-in-astoria-queens/">Bohemian Hall Beer Garden</a></strong><br />

Hotel Gansevoort, 18 Ninth Avenue, at 13th Street; 877-426-7386<br />
Usually horribly crowded and cheesy, but if you are in the Meatpacking District, in need of a rooftop, and can’t get into the members-only <strong><a href="http://www.sohohouseny.com/#/roof" target=_blank>SoHo House</a></strong>, this is it.<br />
<img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/gansevoot-gardenofono1-300x211.jpg" alt="The Garden of Ono" width="150" />If this is not your style, you can always try<br />

<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/thepark-garden1.jpg" alt="The Park - Garden &#038; Penthouse" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.theparknyc.com/" target=_blank>The Park &#8211; Garden &#038; Penthouse</a></strong><br />
118 Tenth Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street; 212-352-3313<br />
Steps away from the <a href="http://islandwoo.com/2009/06/26/high-line-park-manhattans-elevated-park/">elevated High Line Park</a>, The Park features a lower level garden with Japanese maple trees and atop level Penthouse. This place has something for everyone!</p>
<p class="note"><img class="frame alignright" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" src="http://islandwoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/highbar-rooftop21-300x200.jpg" alt="Highbar Rooftop Lounge" width="150" /><strong><a href="http://www.highbarnyc.com/" target=_blank>Highbar Rooftop Lounge</a></strong><br />
251 West 48th Street; 212-229-0010<br />
The breezy sixteen stories Highbar terrace is sprinkled with sprawling day beds, plush love seats as well as a UFO chair. Try the Drunken Watermelon: a scooped out melon rind, filled with the liquor of your choice.</p>

<p><strong>History</strong><br />
NYC Restaurant Week, New York City’s original celebration of dining, dates back to 1992, when it was developed as a one-time culinary program to welcome the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to the City. Though created with an eye toward delegates and other DNC attendees, the program also found a strong following with residents eager for the chance to eat at some of the City’s top restaurants for a fraction of the usual cost—$19.92 for three courses—and who didn’t want NYC Restaurant Week to be a one-time-only event.</p>
<p>Since 1992, the success of NYC Restaurant Week has only grown. It has expanded to include both lunch and dinner offerings—three-course, prix-fixe meals for $24.07 and $35 respectively—and extended to two weeks each in the summer and winter. And this year for the first time ever, many of the participating restaurants are adding Sundays to program which has been historically weekdays only.</p>
<p>Today, NYC Restaurant Week stands apart as one of the City’s most exciting and anticipated events. More than 250 restaurants participate—a cross-section of the NYC culinary scene that encompasses a diverse range of cuisines and includes some of its most time-honored restaurants and buzz-worthy newcomers. Through its evolution, however, the driving force behind the program remains the same: to give visitors and residents the opportunity to experience the quality, variety and hospitality that embody the NYC dining experience.</p>

<strong>Update: 2009 Summer Events at the Bohemian Beer Garden<br />
Battle of The Bands</strong> &#8211; Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 2:00 &#8211; 9:00 pm<br />
Co-hosted by the Why Leave Astoria Organization.<br />
Featuring Brooklyn vs. Queens bands in the huge outdoor beer garden<br />
Free Admission | <a href="#2009">More 2009 Events</a> </p>
<p>Astoria is known to many for its many authentic Greek restaurants and the biggest free outdoor public pool. Astoria is also known for the most famous beer garden in the city, the 90 year old <a href="http://www.bohemianhall.com/" target="_blank">Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden</a> on 24th Avenue and 31st Street.</p>
<p>What most people don&#8217;t know is that the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden is the last original remaining beer garden in all of New York City where there were once 800 (three in Astoria alone)! Czech and Slavak immigrants living in Astoria from the late 1800&#8242;s built Bohemian Hall in 1910 and added the authentic European Beer Garden in 1919.</p>
<p>Today, most people flock to the Beer Garden after work and on the weekends to enjoy pitchers of a variety of beers including Pilsner Urquell, the beer that was born in the town of Plzen in Bohemia &#8211; what is now the Czech Republic.</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="alert"><strong>Islandwoo Tips to make your trip to Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria better: </strong>Although the beer garden is open late (until 11PM M,T,W, Su and Midnight Th, F, Sa), go early to grab a bench for you and your friends. The garden fills up quick as the sun sets. Be sure to grab the Kilbasa plate (see picture below) for only $7 and be generous as pitchers are only $14. Enjoy your summer outdoors!</p>
